A Sky News article featured the Page Research Centre’s report claiming coal power could cut electricity prices by 25 per cent.
“Australia’s power bills would fall by 25 per cent if new coal-fired power stations are constructed, and would drop even further if existing plants are refurbished, research commissioned by the National Party has found.
The Page Research Centre investigated the role of coal and non-renewable energy sources in Australia’s future grid ahead of the Nationals’ decision to dump net zero by 2050.
The Nationals took on the report as well as the consensus of their Federal Council on Saturday before officially dropping support for a net zero by 2050 target on Sunday.
The PRC’s CEO Gerard Holland, who co-authored the report, recommended Australia do its fair share to reduce global emissions without “acting ahead of the rest of the world”.
Arche Energy, a clean energy advisory firm, advised the centre that a grid predominately reliant on coal would lower retail power costs by 25 per cent.
However continuing Australia’s transition towards renewables would raise costs further, it advised.”
