“Rent for a two to three-bedroom house in South Australia has jumped by 63 per cent, from about $1645 a month in 2020 to $2685 in 2026.
“Mortgage repayments on a moderate $400,000 loan have risen 76 per cent, from about $1620 to $2850 a month, while comprehensive car insurance has almost doubled.
“Yet average gross pay has risen by just 22 per cent over the same period.”
Dr Fiona Mueller, the director of Research at the Page Research Centre, said the outlook was “glum” if cost-of-living struggles continued at the current rate.
“People are not confident, and the rising costs are such an immediate challenge,” she said. “It really overrides just about everything else”.
